Even more beautiful

“The only way to break the hold of a beautiful object on the soul is to show it an object even more beautiful.”

Thomas Chalmers

You’re beginning to recognize when you’re lured by soul-poisoning counterfeits. You realize you’ve settled for happiness bought, or validity gained, from lesser objects or people or prestige. How though, will the grip of those pleasurable substitutes ever be shattered? There is only one way. And it’s as Thomas Chalmers said:

We must come to see the Lord as even more beautiful.

More beautiful than all the beautiful objects gripping our soul. More beautiful than all the lesser breads. As we do, they begin to taste as rottenness in our mouth. As we do, we realize we’ve been content with a plastic cup when the crystal goblet was ours.

Ask God to show you when you turn away from the true Bread of Life and fill your life with false nourishment. Ask Him to give you a heart that despises the foulness of the substitutes you’ve daily fed on. Only then do those beautiful objects lose their hold on your soul. Only then does your soul hunger for the love you are meant to know. Vast, unmeasured love. Love boundless and free. Love flowing, flooding, inundating your inmost heart (Rom. 5:5).

You then yearn for Jesus Himself. You waken to the realization that you desire His unequalled, matchless Presence. You long for Him and Him alone.

He breaks the hold. No object or person or prestige you’ve turned to in place of Him compares.

For He is even more beautiful.

About Jill

I'm a wife, mom to three beautiful children, and currently work at two jobs for which I'm very grateful -- part-time at my kids' school, and as children's ministry director at Redeemer PCA in Athens, GA, a place our family treasures as our church home. It's been thirty years since the Lord saved me, and to this day I'm astounded at His steadfast love shed upon unfaithful me. My hope would be that I might speak and write in ways God would use to soften hearts toward Him, that we would together be enamored by the glorious beauty of Jesus and awakened to His love unimagined. Thanks so much for reading!
