readied for Christmas

If you live in the U.S., you’re probably full of Thanksgiving turkey, and a “get ready for Christmas” post seems crazy. But. Get ready. And I don’t mean get ready to head out for pre-Christmas sales. I mean ready your heart and mind for what you might miss in the rush, rush, rush of the coming season.

The candles and candies have their place, but we want to make sure that in all the Christmas rush and hubbub we adore Jesus above all. (Good News of Great Joy, John Piper)

We do want to adore Jesus above all. But without forethought, we easily get caught up in the candies and candles. How can we plan ahead, then, so the seasonal rush doesn’t sweep us along into materialism and empty celebration?

A daily devotional helped me last year. Beautifully written, John Piper’s 25-day devotional sweetened my desire for the Lord and quickened my mind with good news of great joy. Full of truth that turned and re-turned my heart to Jesus, the readings begin December 1st and run through Christmas Day. This year’s readings are called The Dawning of Indestructible Joy, and I can’t wait to start reading.

As the Christmas rush begins, don’t get caught up in the wrong things. Indestructible joy is offered you by the God of the universe, and His indestructible kind of joy won’t be found in a candy wrapper.

“Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near …”

Isaiah 55:6

About Jill

I'm a wife, mom to three beautiful children, and currently work at two jobs for which I'm very grateful -- part-time at my kids' school, and as children's ministry director at Redeemer PCA in Athens, GA, a place our family treasures as our church home. It's been thirty years since the Lord saved me, and to this day I'm astounded at His steadfast love shed upon unfaithful me. My hope would be that I might speak and write in ways God would use to soften hearts toward Him, that we would together be enamored by the glorious beauty of Jesus and awakened to His love unimagined. Thanks so much for reading!
