when God says no

When God says no, and you’re tempted toward anger or despair, remember these words:

God never withholds from His child that which His love and wisdom call good. God’s refusals are always merciful  — “severe mercies” at times but mercies all the same. God never denies us our hearts desire except to give us something better. (Elisabeth Elliot)

image001O believer in Christ, treasure this truth in your heart! When you pray, and you’re tempted to hear God’s answer as a mere resounding NO!, determine instead to trust that He always plans something better.

For what your earthly eyes see as prohibition, God plans as protection. And what your ears interpret as refusal and your heart interprets as severe, God plans as mercy. You’ll understand fully in heaven, and you’ll overflow with praise for all His wisdom and love given you. Then, you’ll burst forth with song when you fully grasp the intent behind His severe mercies. For now, when you’re tempted to dwell on the “Stop, child!” — sure you’ve been denied tender care — dwell instead on the “I have something better.” Determine to rest in, remember, and cherish this truth: He never denies your heart’s desire except to give you something better.

Today, even if God says no, still trust Him.

About Jill

I'm a wife, mom to three beautiful children, and work as children's ministry director at Redeemer PCA in Athens, GA, a place our family treasures as our church home. It's been thirty years since the Lord saved me, and to this day I'm astounded at His steadfast love shed upon unfaithful me. My hope would be that I might speak and write in ways God would use to soften hearts toward Him, that we would together be enamored by the glorious beauty of Jesus and awakened to His love unimagined. Thanks so much for reading!
