when we exercise spiritual gifts

image001

When we exercise the gifts which Christ has given us we are really saying to our fellow Christians and others: “See how much the Lord Jesus Christ loves you and cares for you; He has sent me to serve you in this way; He is using my hands and feet, my lips and ears, to show His love.” (Sinclair Ferguson)

I love Sinclair Ferguson’s words. And this little-known, but captivating painting by Ferdinand Georg Waldmuller (1793-1865) somehow helps me in the same way. The expressions of the mother supporting, the little girl offering, and the old man accepting speak of the beauty of serving others.

She serves with her hands. Today, Jesus might send you to serve with your feet, or as  you speak, or as you listen. Today, whatever you do, however you serve, do all as His emissary of love.

About Jill

I'm a wife, mom to three beautiful children, and currently work at two jobs for which I'm very grateful -- part-time at my kids' school, and as children's ministry director at Redeemer PCA in Athens, GA, a place our family treasures as our church home. It's been thirty years since the Lord saved me, and to this day I'm astounded at His steadfast love shed upon unfaithful me. My hope would be that I might speak and write in ways God would use to soften hearts toward Him, that we would together be enamored by the glorious beauty of Jesus and awakened to His love unimagined. Thanks so much for reading!
