For he satisfies the longing soul,
and the hungry soul he fills with good things.
All my life I had a longing
For a drink from some clear spring,
That I hoped would quench the burning
Of the thirst I felt within.
Feeding on the husks around me,
Till my strength was almost gone,
Longed my soul for something better,
Only still to hunger on.
Poor I was, and sought for riches,
Something that would satisfy,
But the dust I gathered round me
Only mocked my soul’s sad cry.
Well of water, ever springing,
Bread of life so rich and free,
Untold wealth that never faileth,
My Redeemer is to me.
Hallelujah! I have found Him
Whom my soul so long has craved!
Jesus satisfies my longings,
Through His blood I now am saved.
Clara T. Williams, 1875
Many people you meet, masked by outwardly assured appearances, actually long for some clear spring from which to drink. Offer them water! Many you meet, masked by a don’t-approach-me facade, actually languish from feeding on the world’s husks. Offer them the Bread of life! Many, confused by their soul’s sad cry, intent on squelching, sublimating, and hiding behind myriads of masks, actually long for something that will satisfy.
Soul-craving satisfaction comes only from Jesus, the Redeemer. Offer Him to the assured, the unapproachable, the pretender!
For Jesus, and only Jesus, satisfies the longing soul.
